XXII. HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE
The Central Statistical Organization conducted a household
expenditure survey at Yangon in 1958 using stratified two stage partial
replacement continuous random sampling method. A sample of 2030 households
were selected after exclusion of those households with single dwellers
and households of income of more than K400.
In July 1965, the urban consumer expenditure survey
in Yangon was conducted with a sample size of 1750 households.
The Central Statistical Organization conducted a consumer
expenditure survey in January 1972 using stratified two-phase sampling
method. The survey covered 26 townships with 2000 sample households.
In 1978-79, a household expenditure survey was conducted
in Yangon using the same method used in 1958. A sample of
1200 households were interviewed.
In September 1986, the Central Statistical Organization
conducted an urban household expenditure survey in Yangon. A sample of
1800 households in 10 townships were selected, using a two-stage stratified
random sampling design.
A nation-wide household expenditure survey was firstly
introduced in November 1989 and it covered 36 sample townships in fourteen
states and divisions. A three-stage random sampling method was employed
in that survey. Concerning with Yangon City, the survey covered 10 townships
with 1500 sample households.
In February 1994, the household expenditure and social
survey was conducted in Yangon. A sample of 1800 households in 12 townships
were selected and a two-stage stratified random sampling method was used.
The household expenditure survey was conducted by the Central Statistical
Organization in Yangon City and Mandalay City during the period March-April
1996. A sample of 2250 households in 9 townships were surveyed for Yangon
City and a two-stage stratified random sampling design was adopted for
it.
The second nation-wide household income and expenditure
survey was conducted by the Central Statistical Organization in November
1997, covering 45 sample townships in all states and divisions and a sample
of 25470 urban and rural households were selected using a stratified three-stage
random sampling design.
In 2001, the third nation-wide household income and
expenditure survey was conducted by the CSO in 75 sample townships in
fourteen states and divisions. A sample of 30,000 urban and rural households
were selected using a three-stage stratified simple random sampling.
Integrated household living conditions survey was conducted
by the Planning Department of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic
Development in collaboration with the Central Statistical Organization
with the financial assistance of UNDP and the technical assistance of
the IDEA International Institute in 2004-2005. The total number of households
interviewed in the first round (November 2004) is 18660 and the sample
size of 18635 households were interviewed in the second round (May 2005),
using multi-stage random selection based on probability proportional to
size.
Table 22.01, 22.02 and 22.03 mention the percentage distribution of
average monthly household expenditure by group at the Union level and
for Union-urban and Union-rural areas respectively. Table 22.04 present
percentage distribution of average monthly household expenditure by group
for Yangon City.
